The medieval (Byzantine) castle at Pythagorion

On the southwest side of the harbor of Pythagorion (ancient Samos),
there is a low hill on which parts of the Byzantine Castle of the city are preserved to this day.
The site has been in use since the late Neolithic period (late 4th millennium BC). During the archaic period the hill was surrounded by the strong fortifications that protected the port of Pythagorion, it is even believed that the palace of the tyrant of Samos, Polykratis (6th century BC) was located here. The remains of buildings of the Hellenistic and Roman periods attest to the use of the hill during the following centuries.
